Station Motif
Abacus stripe pattern
The abacus was first introduced to Japan at the end of the Muromachi period (1336-1573). At the beginning of the Edo period (1863-1868), it was also commonly used as a calculation tool.
Patterns that employed this motif appeared when Edo merchant culture began to flourish. Favored by the merchant class, these stylish patterns became fashionable designs for everyday items such as yukata (summer kimono), hanten (winter coats), and tenugui (hand towels).
