The subject of this pattern is the mane of a shishi, which is usually translated as "lion." The shishi is a mythological creature—a divine beast that is thought to ward off evil. It is also known as a "karashishi" in order to differentiate the shishi from the wild boar (inoshishi). One famous design incorporates the karashishi and peony based on the legend that the shishi adores peonies. This motif makes an appearance in the Noh play "The Stone Bridge" (Ishibashi) in a spirited form.
