From Saturday, April 26, 2025 to Tuesday, May 6, 2025 (national holiday), the first Antarctic research vessel "Sōya" will be decorated with a full ship and hoisted with carp streamers.

◎What is that flag?
At the "Mansenkazari" event held on anniversaries, many flags are hoisted from bow to stern of the "Sōya".
There is also a flag that looks like the Japanese flag, so you might think it is the "flag of the world" used at sports festivals, but if you look closely, it is a little different from the national flag.
Those flags are called "signal flags" and were made to communicate with distant ships in the days before wireless communication. They represent letters and numbers, which can be combined to form sentences.
The Soya also has a place to store "signal flags," so let's look for them on board!
